Concrete Canoe Club logo

Hi! We are the Concrete Canoe Club; a brand-new society dedicated to designing and constructing a canoe made out of concrete, which will ultimately be raced against other universities.

Although we are a sister society to CivSoc, we’re open to anyone who wants to get involved and have many opportunities available for those not undertaking an engineering degree.

The canoe, which will be made throughout the academic year, is designed and constructed by our members. We’ll have teams in structural design, mix design and construction. They’ll also be plenty of opportunities for you to integrate the engineering concepts learned in lectures into a fun and challenging activity.  If you’re not an engineering student, don’t panic we’ll teach you! We’ll run design activities through the Autumn Semester, and construction will run be in Spring Term.

Your skills, and the design and build of the canoe, will be tested by racing against other university teams at an end of year competition, hosted by UoB on a local reservoir. We want to make the race day an event in itself with entertainment, performances and refreshments, a proper day out.  We’re throwing the gauntlet to other unis already and hope many will take on our challenge.  Also, this is the first competition of it’s kind in the UK for many years so it’s set to be great fun!

This Society will provide you with an opportunity to gain practical experience, leadership and team skills, while working in a fun and challenging environment solving this unique problem. The skills you learn with Concrete Canoe will be invaluable to your future careers, regardless of career path. Not only will this look good, but we will have great fun doing it, and at the end of the year there will be something to show for it: a concrete canoe!

We are looking for members of all year groups to sign up and contribute their ideas. If any of this interests or intrigues you, why not find us on Facebook (Concrete Canoe Club University of Birmingham) or email (uobconcretecanoe@gmail.com) us? This is your chance to be the first members of this new and exciting challenge!

We can’t wait to work with you!
