Thirty years ago, we had a chance to save the planet. The science of climate change was settled. The world was ready to act. Almost nothing stood in our way – except ourselves.
American novelist, Nathaniel Rich has written a two-part article that addresses the 10-year period from 1979 to 1989: the decisive decade when humankind first came to a broad understanding of the causes and dangers of climate change.
Upon reading the article, Professor Martin Freer, Director of the Birmingham Energy Institute commented: “This article that appeared in the New York Times Magazine a few weeks ago is a thought provoking retrospective on the development of the evidence and case for climate change and the political inertia that means the opportunity to divert climate change is getting slimmer.
