Thirty years ago, we had a chance to save the planet. The science of climate change was settled. The world was ready to act. Almost nothing stood in our way – except ourselves.

American novelist, Nathaniel Rich has written a two-part article that addresses the 10-year period from 1979 to 1989: the decisive decade when humankind first came to a broad understanding of the causes and dangers of climate change.

Upon reading the article, Professor Martin Freer, Director of the Birmingham Energy Institute commented: “This article that appeared in the New York Times Magazine  a few weeks ago is a thought provoking retrospective on the development of the evidence and case for climate change and the political inertia that means the opportunity to divert climate change is getting slimmer. The need for action is ever more urgent.”
