The Global Southern Epistemologies Workshop funded by The British Academy and The Global Research Challenges Fund, held a workshop in December at English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, India.
Attending from University of Birmingham were Professor Rebecca Gould PI for the project, and Dr Emanuelle Santos Co-PI together with Professor Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll - a distinguished speaker and leader of the funding session. Other participants included Professor Robert Young (NYU), Professor Pablo Mukherjee (Warwick), Professor Udaya Kumar (Jawaharlal Nehru University), Professor Kalyan Kumar (former Chairman, Lalit Kala Akademi), Professor Chandra Mohan (Secretary, CLAI), Professor lpshita Chanda (EFLU) and Dr Sherin B.S. (EFLU).
Workshop sessions explored how Early Career Research Scholars could secure wider readerships and access to resources for their research, including funding and publication opportunities. The public lectures examined alternatives to area studies paradigms that locate theory in the north while situating the subjects to be studied in the south. Workshop participants continue to stay in touch and to coordinate with each other. Recent outputs inspired by the workshop include:
- Ken Junior Lipenga, The New Normal: Enfreakment in Saga, The Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship.
- Fatima Bessedik, A Heideggerian Reading of Jack’s Homelessness in Marilynne Robinson’s Home, Critical Survey.
The workshop was also the subject of a report in the newsletter of the Comparative Literature Association of India.
