The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to John B Goodenough, M Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino, for their pioneering work in developing the lithium-ion batteries which power our smart phones and modern world. Professor Peter Slater, Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, explains the chemistry inside the batteries.
