Dr Victoria Goodyear (SportExR), Prof. Kathleen Armour (PVC-Education) and Hannah Wood (previous RA in SportExR) are the recipients of the 2019 Exemplary Paper Award from Research on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education SIG within the American Educational Research Association.
Dr Victoria Goodyear (SportExR), Prof. Kathleen Armour (PVC-Education) and Hannah Wood (previous RA in SportExR) are the recipients of the 2019 Exemplary Paper Award from Research on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education SIG within the American Educational Research Association. The award was presented to Victoria and Kathleen during the annual conference in Toronto for their paper on young people’s engagement with health-related social media, as part of their Wellcome Trust research.

The Exemplary Paper Award is an annual award that is given to the author(s) of a paper published in a refereed journal during the year prior to the annual meeting. The winning paper must represent high level of scholarship, and hold the potential to have significant impact. This year 11 papers were submitted for review. The winning paper by Goodyear, Armour and Wood was nominated by Professor Steven Silverman from Columbia University New York, who commented that:
“I first read this paper in preparation for my role as a discussant in a symposium at last year’s AERA meeting. It clearly meets all of the requirements to receive the Exemplary Paper Award and its focus, results and methods inform our field and provide a model for other papers. In addition, the focus on physical activity and health and on social media addresses a very contemporary topic. The paper presents new empirical evidence on how social media shapes young people’s health-related knowledge and behaviors, reports on innovative methods and techniques that engaged a large sample of young people as active research participants and offers new theoretical insights into the concept of contemporary pedagogy. The paper advances knowledge by engaging with and reporting on young people’s perspectives. This approach is novel—within PE/PETE and across diverse academic disciplines—and helps to address the clear gaps that exist between the ways in which young people and adults understand social media.”
The American Educational Research Association Conference is one of the most prestigious conferences in education. This year the conference was attended by over 14,000 academics, with a competitive paper acceptance rate of approximately 50%. Victoria and Kathleen have previously held symposia at this conference in New York (2018) and Washington (2016), as well as being previous award recipients of the graduate student Lawrence Locke Award (Victoria) and the Exemplary Paper Award (Kathleen).
