Investment Society

We're the Investment Society and we're delighted to be a part of the EPS Community this year! We know what you're thinking: 'Investment Society is boring/nerdy/exclusive/mathematical/not fun.' We've heard it all before, but we promise you that you couldn't be any further from the truth!

See, at Investment Society, we've decided to take a new approach. Gone are the days where you had to be an economics/finance student to join our society. We welcome all students from any degree or background and encourage you to join, even if you don't know the slightest thing about investing. Why? Well, the Investment Society is particularly welcoming to students from the EPS community. This is because we know many students who study mechanical or chemical engineering, as well as various other EPS disciplines of course, choose to go on to forge careers in the financial world, and we’re here to support you on that journey!

We promise that not only will you learn some new skills at our beginner Investing 101 sessions, you'll have a great time and make new friends too. Our events are going to be exciting and unique, our committee is dedicated and diverse, and we are here to help you. Whether your aim is to learn the fundamentals of investing, to land your dream job in finance, or simply to have fun and meet new people, our society is the best place to do so.

Investment Society is one the largest and fastest-growing societies at the University of Birmingham. Established in 2006, we have been rising up the ranks of the University’s societies’ table ever since, and with over 320 members already, we’re well-positioned to achieve our goals over the course of the next academic year.

Our aim is simple yet ambitious; to become the largest society on campus at the University of Birmingham, with the highest level of member engagement.

We plan to achieve this through offering an array of weekly events, with content for our members delivered through a variety of means. These include our traditional student-led investment classes, which will complement our new online finance blog, and our growing social media presence across LinkedIn, YouTube Facebook, and Instagram. Our socials are also going to be the talk of the town, with (Covid-19 permitting) bar crawls, dinners out, cocktail evenings, sports games, and other great events!

With an incredibly diverse committee, we believe we can attract a wide range of students from all degree backgrounds. No longer will investing and finance bear the misconception of being an exclusive and complex field. We are breaking down the barriers and welcoming all students to our society, giving them the tools they need to increase their investment skill set and break into the financial industry. We strive to capture the interest of students from all walks of life, irrespective of degree background, gender, or ethnicity.

Breaking into the financial world is increasingly challenging and many students on campus fear that the recent Covid-19 pandemic will hamper their career plans and job application progress. As a result, one of our principal aims is to instil a great sense of commercial awareness in our members, with particular emphasis on how the employment landscape is continually evolving. This will ensure you maintain a competitive edge over other students. Through attending our Investing 101 sessions, Alpha Room events, Keynote Speaker and Careers Evenings, our members will stand out to recruiters when it comes to talking about the financial world with confidence, as well as when taking the next step in their careers. Our trading competition in Semester 2 will also test your newly acquired skills and see how you fare against other students!

Finally, this year we're delighted to be partnered with some of the largest names in finance and campus recruitment including KPMG, Lazard and Bright Network. As a result, you'll be able to benefit from special events run by these firms exclusively for our members, top career advice and tips, and support with your internship/graduate scheme applications!

If you want to learn about the basics of investing, share your investment ideas with others, or simply want to make some new friends, make sure to become a member of our society. It's free, easy, and will give you access to all of our events and content. Similarly, check out our social media pages and blog:

We look forward to meeting you soon!
