20 student volunteers have cleared almost two tonnes of waste from the Birmingham canal network.
The Plastic Free UoB group, led by University of Birmingham students, was joined by the Canal and River Trust, Walsall Against Single Use Plastic (WASUP) along with representatives from Birmingham City University to clear the canal between Selly Oak and the University campus in Edgbaston.
They cleared 30 bags of rubbish, three shopping trolleys and roughly half a tonne of assorted plastic.
This part of the canal is well used by students wanting a traffic-free route into campus, and Plastic Free UoB wanted to tackle the plastic and general waste along the towpath and in the water.
University of Birmingham Sustainability Manager Lydia Dutton said: “Plastic Free UoB is doing an excellent job of raising awareness among students and engaging with the University on the issue of single use plastics and environmental sustainability. It’s a great example of collaboration to achieve a common goal.”
The group plan to continue this work, with regular litter picks along the canal. In addition, the University’s Hedgehog Friendly UoB carry out regular litter pics on campus to ensure a safe environment for local wildlife.
