Students from the MSc Artificial Intelligence and Government and MSc Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development programmes recently visited Cardiff to explore how AI and machine learning are shaping real-world policymaking.
The field trip included sessions hosted by the Welsh Government’s Data Science Unit, where students gained insights into how machine learning is being applied across sectors such as transport and healthcare. These sessions highlighted the growing role of AI in informing evidence-based policy decisions.
The visit also featured presentations from Cardiff University’s Natural Language Processing (NLP) group, showcasing cutting-edge research in NLP and computational social science. These discussions demonstrated how advanced AI techniques are contributing to a deeper understanding of complex social issues.
The trip offered students valuable exposure to the ways in which AI can support public policy by providing explanations, fostering public trust, and enabling more timely and informed decision-making.
