Shamil Haroon has been designated as the new Chair for the Faculty of Public Health’s Special Interest Group (SIG) for Primary Care and Public Health, which provides a forum for exploring the vital relationship between primary care and public health practice. It aims to strengthen collaboration between the two disciplines, promote integrated approaches to population health, and support the development of policy, research, and education initiatives that bridge clinical and public health perspectives.

The Faculty of Public Health is a professional membership body for public health specialists, setting standards for training, examination and specialist practice across the UK. Their Primary Care and Public Health SIG was established in 2018 and aims to provide a forum for public health clinicians, GPs, academics and more to collaborate on work involving public health and primary care.

I look forward to my new role as the chair of the FPH's special interest group on primary care and public health. Primary care is a critical component of our healthcare system and a key vehicle for delivering public health measures, such as childhood vaccinations. I aim to use my role to advocate for prevention in primary care and for the public health system to support primary care in achieving this goal.

Dr Shamil Haroon, Associate Clinical Professor in Epidemiology within the Department of Applied Health Sciences.

"The SIG also has a key role in supporting healthcare workers at the interface between primary care and public, including doctors dual training in public health and general practice, and GPs with an extended role in population health and health inequalities."

As Chair of the SIG, Shamil will be responsible for leading strategic direction, facilitating engagement, and promoting initiatives that support knowledge exchange, advocacy, and capacity-building.

Shamil is an Associate Clinical Professor in Epidemiology within the Department of Applied Health Sciences, focusing on respiratory and chronic disease epidemiology as well as public health, primary care and health data science. He was particularly involved in research surrounding long COVID and preventing asthma-related hospitalisations.
