First students start studies on HUST-Birmingham dual degree programme

Initial cohort enrolled on study programme in biomedical sciences and pharmacy - providing them with the opportunity to achieve high-quality dual degrees.

The first students in China have started their studies on an innovative joint programme between Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and the University of Birmingham that will lead to degrees from both institutions.

79 students are enrolled on the study programme in biomedical sciences and pharmacy, which will provide the opportunity to achieve high-quality dual degrees on HUST’s new International Campus, in Wuhan, whilst experiencing the teaching and study methods used at the University of Birmingham.

University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor & Principal Professor Adam Tickell joined HUST President Professor You Zheng to welcome the first cohort of students coming from Beijing, Shanghai, Heilongjiang Henan, Anhui, Hubei and Guangdong.

The cross-disciplined structure of the programme being developed will benefit students as they will experience innovative modules designed to develop skills including independent critical thinking, scientific communication and presentation, team working, cross-disciplinary expertise, digital literacy, entrepreneurship and business mentality.

This joint programme is a flagship initiative between HUST and the University of Birmingham, two leading institutions in China and the UK. It marks a significant milestone in our shared commitment to cultivating future-ready talents with global perspectives and professional expertise—prepared to tackle pressing challenges in health and biomedical sciences.

It is planned that the University of Birmingham-HUST education partnership will lead to a joint institute consisting of programmes with advanced science subjects, including clinical pharmacy with biomedical science, intelligent medical engineering, and potentially electric and electronic engineering.

Birmingham is acknowledged for producing globally employable graduates and is currently ranked the best in the UK by prospective employers. The University recently joined forces with the University of Glasgow to launch an exclusive partnership with JOBShaigui, a leading graduate career support organisation, to help graduates kick-start their careers after finishing their degrees.
