A Masters of Law student at the University of Birmingham has won Student of the Year at this year’s Birmingham Black Lawyers’ Excellence Awards. Eltayeb Bashar, who is studying for an LLM in International Human Rights Law at Birmingham Law School, received the celebrated industry award that recognises academic achievement, community contributions, and ambition in pursuing a legal career.
“I'm deeply honoured and grateful to have won this award,” says Eltayeb, who is founder and CEO of the Global Rights Alliance – an international youth-led human rights organisation spanning 18 countries – and co-founder of Worcester-based The Anti-Racism Initiative charity. “To be recognised by esteemed legal professionals at such a high-level in front of the Birmingham legal industry was incredible.”
The awards were part of Birmingham Black Lawyers’ summer ball, which took place at Edgbaston Stadium and featured a keynote address from Barbara Mills, the chair of the England and Wales Bar. All the major law firms from across the city were in attendance, as well as Stephanie Boyce, the Former President of the Law Society of England and Wales
“I connected with her and she congratulated me on the award, which was great!” says Eltayeb, who was also named Youth Activist of the Year last month. “It’s a reminder to keep working hard. Since winning I’ve been approached by senior barristers and colleagues encouraging me to pursue a career as a barrister. It’s already helping to open doors.”
