Professor Xiao-Ping Zhang
Professor Xiao-Ping Zhang, Professor of Electrical Power Systems, School of Engineering, and Co-Director of Birmingham Energy Institute, received the award for outstanding contributions to the modelling and design of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) Controllers in Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) transmission systems, a vital area for driving a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) is a global network of leading power and electrical engineers, academics and industry professionals from all areas of power and energy. Their annual awards highlight notable contributions to the power and energy industry.
A Fellow of the IEEE and IET, Professor Xiao-Ping Zhang has co-authored several books, including Flexible AC Transmission Systems: Modelling and Control (Springer, 2006 and 2012) and its translated Chinese edition. He has been a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE PES on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), FACTS, and renewable energy generation. He serves on several editorial boards of international power engineering journals, including as the senior editor of the IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy. He also served on the Expert Advisory Group for the UK Government's Offshore Transmission Network Review between 2020 and 2023. His research spans modelling and control of HVDC, FACTS, wind generation and low-frequency transmission, electricity market modelling, power system planning, energy quality, energy union and global electricity grids.
