The BactiVac Network secures major funding to advance its mission of accelerating vaccine development against bacterial infections affecting LMICs.

The University of Birmingham's Bacterial Vaccines Network (BactiVac) is pleased to confirm an additional £1.15 million of funding which has been awarded to the network from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). The BactiVac Network has been a DHSC Delivery Partner since 2018, one year after its establishment in 2017.
The funding has been received from DHSC’s GAMRIF (Global Antimicrobial Resistance Innovation Fund) and UKVN (UK Vaccine Network) programmes and will be used primarily to fund research projects aligned to each programme’s remit. GAMRIF aims to foster innovations to tackle AMR for the benefit of people in LMICs, whilst UKVN is focused on enhancing our epidemic preparedness against future disease outbreaks.
The additional funding will support catalyst research projects focussed on the development of vaccines to control bacterial infections, targeting bacterial pathogens with outbreak potential and where AMR is problematic.
Professor Adam Cunningham, Professor of Functional Immunity and Director of BactiVac Network, said: "We are delighted to continue to be a Delivery Partner for both the GAMRIF and UKVN programmes within DHSC. The additional funding will support catalyst research projects focussed on the development of vaccines to control bacterial infections, targeting bacterial pathogens with outbreak potential and where AMR is problematic. BactiVac will continue to support its membership to develop new vaccines, particularly those that are relevant to LMICs."
BactiVac’s Catalyst Funding scheme has been in operation since 2018, funding Network members’ research projects to pump-prime and advance bacterial vaccinology through supporting partnerships between LMICs and industry. This support from DHSC will allow BactiVac to continue supporting collaborations across the membership, in line with our shared goals.
