Professor Deborah Longworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Birmingham, said: “Ensuring our students are ready for the world of work is a priority of our 2030 Strategy. A Birmingham education develops specialised disciplinary and professional expertise, alongside training in core skills that employers value.

“Students benefit from extensive careers support during their time with us, as well as after graduation, alongside exceptional and varied industry links in all our schools and departments. This ensures our students are a great fit for employers seeking graduate recruits who can hit the ground running.”

The report compiled by High Fliers ranks UK universities which have attracted the most top graduate employers for university careers fairs, on-campus employer presentations, university-specific virtual events, careers service promotions and initiatives, and other locally run publicity during 2024-2025.

This news is the latest external endorsement for the University of Birmingham’s approach to students’ skills, experience and employability. Published last month, the Daily Mail University Guide ranked the University of Birmingham among the top 10 for ‘Career on Track’, top 15 for ‘Graduate Salary’, and top 20 for ‘Highly Skilled Employment’.

In July, the National Student Survey (NSS) published results, and Birmingham ranked seventh in the Russell Group. It outperformed the sector, with an improvement of 4.2% across the average of all institutional questions, compared to a sector average of 1.9%.

Professor Longworth added: “These successes are a testament to the commitment of academic and professional services colleagues to supporting the employability and graduate success of our students, both within the curriculum and through the wider skills and professional development opportunities we provide.”

Employers are an integral part of the University’s Professional Development Advisory Board, working closely with senior academic leadership and the Careers Network to contribute advice to curriculum developments and help shape new employability initiatives.

Over the past year, the University has hosted more than 300 employers on campus. They have contributed to professional development and leadership training, immersive learning experiences, employability projects and mini-internships, graduate recruitment fairs, and the University’s new three-week employability programme in the summer term.
