University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor appointed as Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands

Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Birmingham, has been announced as Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands.
One of eight new Deputy Lieutenants, Professor Tickell will work alongside Lord–Lieutenant Mr Derrick Anderson CBE to engage with a variety of civic, cultural and social initiatives as His Majesty the King’s representatives in the West Midlands. The roles will support every citizen and community across Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton.
Professor Tickell said: “I am delighted to have been named as one of the Lord-Lieutenant’s Deputy Lieutenants. I hope to champion Birmingham’s role as a leading hub for both higher education and business, supporting the great work, activities and achievements of people across the city and wider region. It’s an honour and privilege to serve the Lord-Lieutenant as a representative in the West Midlands, together with my peers, all of whom have made significant contributions to their local communities.”

Duties will include supporting official royal visits to the region, representation at citizenship ceremonies, championing the armed forces, encouraging charitable and voluntary work, and local initiatives to benefit the community.
Deputy Lieutenants will also be responsible for promoting and encouraging nominations for the King’s Honours, the King’s Awards for Voluntary Service, the King’s Award for Enterprise, and the Young Active Citizen’s Award.
Professor Tickell is an economic geographer with a portfolio of research focused on finance, governance and the politics of ideas, having published more than 100 papers, books, chapters and official reports.
After five years as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sussex, Professor Tickell took up his post as Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Birmingham in January 2022. Prior to this, he held posts as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Transfer) and then Provost and Vice-Principal at Birmingham.
Professor Tickell has served on a wide range of public bodies and charity boards in recent years. He is currently on the Board of Universities Superannuation Scheme Limited and has been appointed as a non-executive director by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to guide DSIT in using science and technology to enhance public services, promote digital inclusion, and drive economic growth.
In addition, Professor Tickell has joined the Higher Education Vice-Chancellors Advisory Group established by Baroness Smith, Minister for Skills. His ambition is for Birmingham to be known as the most innovative, vibrant, and exciting place to work or study in the UK.

The new appointments bring the total of Deputy-Lieutenants in the West Midlands to 75; the number is calculated on the basis of population, and the West Midlands is the second largest lieutenancy in the country with a population of nearly 3 million.
