The University of Birmingham’s Professor Elizabeth Sapey has been elected as the President of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain & Ireland.
The Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland (AoP) was founded by William Osler in 1907 to advance medicine “in a manner that promotes friendship amongst Physicians”. Since then, the AoP has become the home of interdisciplinary translational medicine, inviting collaboration at the cutting edge of research.
The AoP seeks to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, reach new audiences, identifying and highlighting new ways of working and encouraging translational research. The aim is to support the advancement of internal medicine and create direct benefits for patients.
Membership is open to clinicians, early career researchers, discovery scientists and industry affiliates, alongside a community of over 400 distinguished elected fellows.
Professor Sapey will begin her role as President after the conclusion of the AoP’s annual meeting in May, which will be hosted at the University of Birmingham. The meeting brings together leading clinicians, researchers, healthcare innovators, and industry partners for two days of scientific exchange and professional insight.
It is a privilege to be President of such an important Association. The focus of my presidency will be increasing opportunities for medical students and early career doctors to do research, starting with a new research prize for medical students at the Association’s annual meeting.
Professor Sapey is currently a Trustee of AoP, as a member of the Board of Trustees. At the University of Birmingham, she is the Head of the School of Medical Sciences and an Honorary Acute Medicine and Respiratory Consultant Physician at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. In 2022, she became the President of the British Association for Lung Research and the Chair of the Research Committee for the Society of Acute Medicine.
Her research interests are based upon her wish to improve the care offered to people when they are suddenly unwell, through better care pathways, understanding why inflammatory processes are so diverse in their presentation and course and through embedding patients and their priorities in research activities.
Professor Sapey is passionate about broadening participation in academic research, previously holding a steering group member role of SUSTAIN, an Academy of Medical Sciences initiative to improve the retention and promotion of women in science. Additionally, she takes part in “meet the researcher” days within local schools to promote a career in science, particularly in groups under-represented in the scientific community.
As President of AoP, Professor Sapey will continue their aims to bring together physicians at the cutting edge of research and create improved outcomes for patients in the UK, Ireland and beyond.
