Joint Institute building on Jinan University campus
The Jinan University-University of Birmingham Joint Institute (J-BJI) in Guangzhou is launching three courses in the rapidly growing areas of data science and bioinformatics.
Graduates will be able to apply for MSc Statistical Data Science, MSc Bioinformatics or MSc Health Data Science. Taught on the Jinan University campus by leading experts from the University of Birmingham and Jinan University, these programmes will prepare students for a wide range of careers from health and life science research to finance and technology.
We are really excited to launch three new programmes with JNU at our Joint Institute, moving into our tenth year. Now is the time to expand our provision, continue to develop the research-led education which is known for its excellence both in teaching quality and graduate outcomes.
Professor Chris Good, Deputy Dean of J-BJI said: "We are really excited to launch three new programmes with JNU at our Joint Institute, moving into our tenth year. Now is the time to expand our provision, continue to develop the research-led education which is known for its excellence both in teaching quality and graduate outcomes. We cannot wait to welcome new students to our Joint Institute from September."
J-BJI was founded in 2016 as a partnership between the University of Birmingham and Jinan University offering undergraduate students a British style education in China with the opportunity to earn high-quality degrees from both institutions.
Associate Professor Qiong Li, Chair and Deputy Dean of J-BJI, said: “I am truly looking forward to the launch of these three new programmes. They not only align perfectly with the complementary strengths of both institutions, but also come at a significant moment as the Joint Institute enters its tenth year of operation.
"I hope to take this opportunity to further establish a seamless talent cultivation pipeline from undergraduate through to doctoral levels, offering students a more continuous and in-depth academic development pathway, while injecting renewed vitality and depth into our partnership.”
This is an important step for J-BJI. After nearly ten years of undergraduate education, we are ready to take the partnership further into postgraduate training. These programmes sit exactly where the strengths of Jinan University and Birmingham meet — in mathematics, data science and their applications in health and life sciences. We believe they will give students a more research-led and international learning experience, while staying closely connected to the needs of industry and society.
More than one thousand undergraduate students have so far graduated on dual-degree programmes in four specialisms: Statistics with Economics, Economics, Information Computing Science and Applied Mathematics. Each four-year programme includes innovative modules designed to develop problem-solving and team-working skills and the ability to apply maths to real-world problems. The newly launched Master’s programmes extend the Joint Institute’s portfolio into postgraduate education.
Professor Xian Zheng, Dean of J-BJI, said: “This is an important step for J-BJI. After nearly ten years of undergraduate education, we are ready to take the partnership further into postgraduate training. These programmes sit exactly where the strengths of Jinan University and Birmingham meet - in mathematics, data science and their applications in health and life sciences. We believe they will give students a more research-led and international learning experience, while staying closely connected to the needs of industry and society.” Ranked 68th in the QS World Rankings, the University of Birmingham has a well-established international teaching offer through academic partnerships with institutions in China and Singapore, and a world-class campus in Dubai.
