Planned Giving at the University of Birmingham

With new tax changes now in place in 2026, there’s never been a better time to explore how planned gifts can create your legacy.

While annual gifts support today’s priorities, a planned gift looks to the future and creates an opportunity to make a lasting impact beyond your lifetime. If the University of Birmingham played a formative role in your life, a planned gift is an opportunity to honour that chapter forever.

Supporting Students

There are many talented individuals who are only able to attend university thanks to generous student support. A planned gift could be the reason someone like you can access a life-changing university education here at Birmingham.

Megan has chosen to remember Birmingham in her will and support future Law students. For Megan, who didn’t take the traditional route into higher education, her own story is the inspiration for pledging a gift to Birmingham. She said:

"Education and the opportunity to learn is very important to me, and leaving a gift to Birmingham Law School is a way to say thank you for giving me a chance all those years ago."

While Megan has chosen to leave a gift to a specific area, there are many students who rely on the Pathways to Birmingham (P2B) scholarship. P2B scholarships break down financial barriers which are often overlooked, for example travel costs to campus and course materials.

Tony Trigg left a gift to Birmingham’s P2B scholarship in his will, and his legacy is changing the lives of P2B scholars every day. As the first in his family to go to university, Tony felt incredibly privileged. Now he is helping others just like him do the same.

[P2B] empowered me to overcome barriers often faced by first-generation university students. It gave me the confidence, preparation, and encouragement I needed to thrive in an environment that can sometimes feel unfamiliar to those from underrepresented backgrounds.

Future Fund Endowments

If you are considering leaving a legacy gift, you may want to consider supporting our Future Fund Endowments.

Beverly has chosen to do just that and make her lasting legacy with our Future Fund Endowments. Reflecting on her decision to remember Birmingham in this way, Beverly said:

"I want to give other young people the chance to have the same experience I had. I chose to give to the Future Funds as part of my bequest as I love the idea that the endowment will make my donation go further and benefit more students over a longer period of time."

By opting for our endowment, Beverly’s planned gift will be wisely invested to create an annual return. Her original gift will never be spent, yet the income it generates will break down barriers for students who otherwise might never be able to access higher education.

Your planned gift

It is truly impossible to summarise the huge impact of a planned gift at Birmingham. One thing we can guarantee is that your gift will be used as instructed, and your time at Birmingham will be remembered year after year.

There are many ways to include a planned gift for Birmingham, for example:

  • Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs)
  • Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)
  • Charitable Lead Trust (CLT)
  • Life Insurance
  • Retirement Accounts (e.g. 401(k), 403(b), IRA)
  • IRA Charitable Rollovers (aged 72&1/2 +)

We recommend downloading your copy of our planned giving guide and reviewing your will alongside a legal professional.
