Professor Tamara Swaab, an internationally recognised cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Birmingham, has been elected as a foreign member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities

Election to the Society is one of the highest honours bestowed on scholars in the Netherlands and recognises outstanding contributions to scholarship across the sciences and humanities. The Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities, or Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen in Dutch, was founded in 1752, and is the oldest learned society in the Netherlands. Its mission is to advance scholarship across the sciences and humanities and to promote meaningful engagement between science and society.

Professor Swaab is known for her research on how the brain supports language comprehension and adapts to different language environments across the lifespan. Her work spans early investigations of language disorders through to current research on bilingualism, predictive processing and the neural mechanisms that enable flexible communication.

I am truly honoured to be elected as a foreign member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities. This recognition is not only a personal milestone, but also a testament to the importance of research that connects scientific discovery with real-world impact. I am excited to join a community of scholars dedicated to promoting excellence and dialogue across disciplines, and I look forward to working together to build bridges between science and society. It is a privilege to contribute to the Society’s longstanding mission and to support initiatives that advance understanding and foster collaboration both within the Netherlands and internationally.”
