Last month, the ensemble was pleased to be invited to perform in the annual Sonia Sabri ‘Akaar’ event at the Midlands Arts Centre, an evening which ‘supports the growth of South Asian Arts and Culture in the West Midlands by providing an annual platform to share and celebrate the region’s emerging talent’.

As part of a lineup of many groups performing a variety of classical dances and music, the South Asian Music Ensemble performed a Qawwali piece by Nusrat al-Dari Saab. According to the Sonia Sabri company, the ensemble members were ‘blending Qawwali with musical influences from diverse backgrounds. Guided by the incredible Sarvar Sabri and Gulfam Sabri, this journey has been one of creativity, connection, and discovery’.

The South Asian Music Ensemble rehearses every Wednesday during term time from 1500 - 17:00 on campus. Following a successful application to the Alumni Impact Fund last year, University Music was able to purchase several traditional South Asian instruments which are available to be used by any member of the ensemble. If you are interested in joining the group and/or would like to try one of these instruments, please be in touch with universitymusichub@contacts.bham.ac.uk.
