The University of Birmingham continues to perform strongly in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, with seven subject areas now featuring in the global top 100, up from five last year. The University ranks 98th in the world league table.
Published today (Wednesday 21 January 2026), the results demonstrate the University of Birmingham’s excellence across a comprehensive range of disciplines.
Subjects ranked in the global top 100 include:
Business and Economics, alongside Psychology, have risen two places, whilst Law and Life Sciences have risen eight places, compared to the 2025 ranking.
Our continued rise in international subject rankings demonstrates the quality of teaching, research, and student experience across our disciplines.
Professor Deborah Longworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Birmingham, said:

In 2025, Birmingham was named the number one institution targeted by the UK’s top 100 graduate employers for the second consecutive year.
The THE subject rankings evaluate universities across 18 performance indicators spanning five areas: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook, and industry.
The latest THE ranking reflects sustained improvement for Birmingham over the last seven years, with the University climbing 43 places since 2018. The University of Birmingham also ranks 76th in the QS World University Rankings 2025.
