The University of Birmingham has opened a new dedicated hub for commuter students, bringing together practical facilities, a space to relax, study and access careers support into one welcoming location.

Located on the first floor of the Green Heart Forum, The View has been transformed into a welcoming hub where commuter students can study, relax, meet friends and access practical support between lectures. The space includes lockers, microwaves and vending facilities, alongside dedicated areas offering careers and employability advice.

Designed in direct response to student feedback, The View aims to help commuter students feel more connected to campus life, access support more easily, and build a stronger sense of belonging within the University student community.

Ahead of its official opening on 1 October, students attended a launch event on 30 September, hosted in partnership with the Commuter Student Society.

We know that commuter students can face different challenges in balancing their studies, travel and wider commitments. Created in direct response to student feedback, The View will help ensure that every student feels welcome, supported and part of our University community.

The event brought together commuter students, student representatives and staff from Careers Network and Student Services to celebrate the new space, connect with peers and explore the opportunities it offers.

The View also serves as a dedicated base for careers and employability activity, making it easier for students to access workshops, skills development opportunities and one-to-one careers guidance throughout their time at Birmingham.

Students can take advantage of tailored careers support, helping them explore opportunities across a range of sectors, connect with employers and identify vacancies both within the region and beyond.

Professor Matthew Leeke, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience): "We know that commuter students can face different challenges in balancing their studies, travel and wider commitments. Created in direct response to student feedback, The View will help ensure that every student feels welcome, supported and part of our University community.

"By bringing together study space, practical facilities, careers support and opportunities to connect with others, we hope The View will help students make the most of their time on campus and strengthen their sense of belonging."

While designed with commuter students in mind, the space is open to all members of the University community, providing a welcoming environment where students and staff can meet, eat lunch, study or catch up with colleagues and friends.

The opening of The View builds on Birmingham's strong track record of supporting student success and experience. Earlier this year, the University was ranked first among Russell Group universities in the National Student Survey (NSS), with students rating Birmingham highly across key measures of satisfaction and overall student experience.

This follows a series of accolades for the University of Birmingham which include:

Earlier this year, Birmingham was also named one of the two most targeted UK universities by leading graduate employers in The Graduate Market in 2026, underlining its commitment to helping students develop the skills, confidence and connections needed to succeed after graduation.
