A Clinical Lecturer from the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry has become the first British winner of a prestigious research prize awarded by the European Society of Endodontology.
Phillip Tomson a Lecturer and Specialist Registrar in Restorative Dentistry won the prestigious Wladimir Adlivankine European Society of Endodontology Research Prize for his work into using a new material to protect the pulp in grossly decayed teeth. Phillip was presented with the award at the Society's biennial conference at Trinity College Dublin.
The paper "In Vitro Characterisation of the Dentinogenic Potential of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate": explores the mechanisms by which Mineral Trioxide Aggregate acts as a pulp-capping agent. This research will help develop techniques used to cap the pulp in heavily broken down teeth. The judges praised the paper for the quality of the manuscript and the presentation, which is the first to explore the mechanistic action of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate in pulp capping.
Professor Philip Lumley the Director and Head of the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry said: "We are absolutely delighted with Phil's success, it is a terrific achievement.
