The University of Birmingham's men's cross-country team completed one of the most successful seasons in their history by clinching the Birmingham League title on Saturday (11th February). Victory in the final race of the season in Cheltenham gave the team the title for only the second time in 77 years.
The University team won the final race of the season in Cheltenham to clinch overall victory by a margin of nearly 100 points. The success was built on an extremely consistent team effort, with four University runners finishing in the top ten overall.
Richard Kaye capped an exceptional individual season by winning for the second time in four races, claiming the individual title in the process. Dan Pettit and Ian Williams finished 4th and 5th respectively, with Tom Doe the fourth top ten finisher.
The Birmingham League is run over four races throughout the season with University teams competing against clubs from across the Midlands.
The University's Cross Country coach Bud Baldaro said: "It has been
exceptionally gratifying to see how hard the team have worked to achieve these results. For much of the season, we have had to manage without some of our top runners, but the guys coming in have been exceptional.
Winning the Birmingham League title, on top of success in the British Universities Championship make this one of the most successful years in the team's history"
