The Rt Hon Lord Falconer will lead a key debate into the causes and remedies of miscarriages of justice at the University of Birmingham today.
The University will host this major conference with the Criminal Cases Review Commission to mark the 10th anniversary of the Commission’s creation.
The Lord Chancellor and Secretary for State for Constitutional Affairs the Rt Hon Lord Falconer will join the Director of Public Prosecutions Sir Ken MacDonald QC and Shadow Attorney General Dominic Grieve MP at the conference by examining the role of the commission and the wider issues of miscarriages of justice.
Professor Stephen Shute, Director of the Institute of Judicial Administration at the University’s School of Law, said: “The Institute of Judicial Administration is delighted to be co-organising the event. Over the last decade, the Institute of Judicial Administration and the School of Law have developed very strong links with the Commission and this conference - with its outstanding array of speakers - is a celebration of that relationship.”
Since its establishment in 1997, the Commission has reviewed more than 8, 000 cases and referred almost 350 for new appeal. It has dealt with dozens of high profile cases such as Sally Clarke, Sion Jenkins and James Hanratty.
