A leading expert in Islamic and Religious Studies from the War College in the United States will address a select group of leading scholars and government officials heading counter-terrorism initiatives, in a closed colloquium at the University of Birmingham today.

Dr Sherifa Zuhur will speak at the colloquium, Defusing Violence through Shari'a, which is part of a wider collaborative research programme into religious violence and counter-terrorism with the Institute of Applied Social Studies and the Department of Theology and Religion.

Dr Zuhur is currently researching Islamic movements and their development in the post-9/11 period.

Organiser Dr Salwa El-Awa said: "The event is intended to provide a forum for an open and thorough discussion about the controversial topic of partnership with Islamic groups in de-radicalisation work."
