The University of Birmingham’s Careers and Employability Centre is calling for businesses to offer work experience placements to a wealth of talented, enthusiastic and knowledgeable individuals seeking industry experience, the ability to put their knowledge into practice and vital networking opportunities.

In an age where graduate employment is becoming increasingly competitive, the University is seeking to equip its undergraduates, graduates and post-graduate students with an employability edge and recognises that work experience is the perfect platform to enable skill development, networking opportunities and personal development as well as hands-on experience of organisational working practices.

In return, businesses can progress their own organisation, benefitting from an increased work force who can offer fresh new ideas in the form of enthusiastic, hardworking and computer literate individuals. Work experience is a cost-effective solution to recruitment needs, providing the opportunity to develop projects that your company may not have had the time or resources to carry out previously.

Undergraduates, through to doctoral and post-doctoral students, who can provide consultancy services, are seeking work experience opportunities which can manifest themselves in many forms, including: part-time work, summer internships, volunteering posts, year placements and work shadowing.

Work experience is now essential in today’s economy, allowing participants to get a taste for a selected career path, develop new skills and gain some vital experience to help them secure a graduate role.

Sue Welland, Work Experience Officer in the Careers and Employability Centre, commented:

“There is a wealth of talent waiting to be explored at the University of Birmingham; from enthusiastic and bright undergraduates seeking to develop their skills and knowledge to prepare for graduate work, to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers who can add valuable experience, expertise and consultancy to an organisation.

“Offering work experience through the University of Birmingham gives companies access to professional, talented and qualified students and post-graduates who can benefit from placements, part-time work or even the chance to shadow a professional in the work place.”

The University’s Careers and Employability Centre can advertise any type of student vacancy and also has an extensive employer directory where students and graduates can seek out work experience placements.
