Teaching strength was highlighted by 93% of respondents who agreed that teaching staff at the University are ‘good at explaining things’.

There was particularly strong feedback for a number of individual subject areas across the spectrum of programmes, ranging from Physics and French to Social Work.

The University of Birmingham is ranked 7th in the Russell Group for overall student satisfaction, ahead of Manchester, Warwick, and the London School of Economics.

Commenting on today’s results University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Eastwood said:

“This has been another remarkable year for Birmingham. Not only were we named University of the Year for Graduate Employment by The Times and The Sunday Times but our focus on continuous improvement across all areas of university life, from teaching to employability skills and student welfare, has clearly been recognised by our students.

“We believe that providing a first-class experience for our students is an essential part of being a world class university and we are investing heavily in the future. Over the next 12 months we will see the opening of a number of state-of-the-art facilities including a new £42m library, and a sports centre that will include Birmingham’s only 50m swimming pool.

“It is an exciting time to be a part of the University and our students will continue to experience the benefits of this investment in the years ahead.”

These latest results build on the University’s impressive performance across all higher education league tables. Indeed, when it comes to ‘graduate prospects’ – the number of graduates who enter professional employment or graduate-level further study within six months of graduating - the University of Birmingham is ranked 5th in the UK by The Complete University Guide, ahead of institutions such as Manchester, Warwick, and Kings College London.

The National Student Survey was launched in 2005 and is open to all final year degree students at institutions in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The survey is designed to assess students' opinions of the quality of their degree programmes. In an additional question 93% of our students said they would recommend us as a place to study. NSS is conducted by Ipsos MORI on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) .
