The University of Birmingham has enhanced its position in global Higher Education, following the publication of a new European ranking system.
Examining 242 European universities, the Times Higher Education (THE) Europe Teaching Rankings 2018 measure institutions against a range of criteria including student engagement and recommendation, academic reputation, faculty/student ratio and student career preparation.
The University of Birmingham is placed 25th in Europe in the rankings, which are published for the first time this year.
Other European institutions ranked alongside Birmingham in the top 30 include the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as Sorbonne University, Paris-Sud University and the University of Barcelona.
The announcement follows Birmingham’s rise in the 2019 QS World University Rankings, which confirmed the University’s status as one of the world’s best research intensive institutions. Birmingham placed 79th in these rankings, a five-place improvement on 2018.
The ranking includes a new THE European Student Survey, which questioned more than 30,000 university students across Europe countries - focussing on student engagement, opportunity to interact with others, student recommendation and career preparation.
Birmingham was awarded a Gold rating in the 2016/17 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Student satisfaction with teaching quality and progression of graduates to highly skilled employment / further study were classed as ‘outstanding’.
The University is acknowledged for producing globally employable graduates and was chosen as the Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Graduate Employment 2016. It is the second most frequently targeted UK university for the top employers looking for graduate recruits, according to High Fliers Research.
