The part-time degree is designed for SENCos who hold the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCo). It is for those who wish to continue their studies and gain a full MA

On our MA Inclusion (SENCo) postgraduate degree, you will study modules across a broad spectrum of inclusion and special educational needs. The course has been designed based on feedback provided by SENCos who wish to continue learning about the fascinating and complex world of special educational needs and disability. The course enables prospective students to further develop their knowledge of specific conditions such as autism or mental health or wider issues such as inclusion. These modules are led by world leading experts in their field whose published work has been used to improve the lives of countless children and young people with special educational needs.  

The MA Inclusion is a flexible, part-time course for those who want to make a difference to the lives of children, young people and adults with diverse needs. It has been designed for teachers and other educational and care professionals working in a range of national and international settings.

Our approach will enable you to investigate inclusive practice through multiple lenses and to embrace cultural, linguistic and developmental diversity. You will be able to choose module options from across an unrivalled range of provision in Inclusive Education within the School of Education at the University of Birmingham.

Unless indicated otherwise the modules listed for this programme are for students starting in 2024.

You will be required to take three optional modules from the following list:

  • Cross-Cultural Issues in SEND
  • Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties and Mental Health: Identification, Assessment and Provision
  • Understanding the Common and Diverse Needs of Autistic Adults and Young People
  • Reflective Practice in Meeting the Needs of Learners with SLD/PMLD
  • The Educational Needs of Autistic Children and Young People
  • Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties and Mental Health: Strategies, Interventions and Approaches
  • Curriculum and Approaches for Autistic Children and Young People
  • Developing and Evaluating Interventions for Learners with SLD/PMLD
  • Evaluation and Policy Analysis for Inclusive Education
  • Using Enabling Practice with Autistic Adults and Young People
  • Inclusion: Universal and Specialist Approaches
  • The Developmental Psychology of Childhood Adolescence (Distance Education)
  • Introduction to sensory impairment
  • Inclusive Practice with Autistic Adults
  • Issues in the Education of Pupils Identified with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Evidence-informed practice in autism

Each module is worth 20 credits. There is also a compulsory 60 credit dissertation.

Scholarships and Loans

UK and EU students (with settled or pre-settled status) may be eligible for a postgraduate loan which provides up to £12,167 (for 2023/2024 entry) for taught and research Masters courses in all subject areas.

Our Standard Requirements

You must hold the following academic qualifications:

  • A good first degree
  • The National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCo)

You must also hold:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS),
  • OR Qualified Teacher Learning Status (QTLS)
  • OR Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS - appropriate for ages 0-5 only)

In addition, you need to have completed your induction period.

English language requirements

In order to undertake this programme of study, you will need to demonstrate that you have a good level of written and spoken English. You can demonstrate your level of English with IELTS or alternative qualifications. Speakers of English as a second language will be required to hold an IELTs 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band or equivalent qualification. 

International Requirements

This programme is part-time and blended learning. Blended learning consists of a mixture of both campus-based and distance learning elements. 


This degree is designed to supplement SENCOs already working in the field who wish to gain a full MA. It is highly suited to those who aspire to develop inclusion within schools and across local areas and multi academy trusts. The qualification is also of use for those wishing to work in local authority or advocacy roles.     

Many of our graduates successfully apply for roles working with children and young people with special educational needs. The course also provides an opportunity to work towards a further professional qualification in the field of Education, which includes progression to a PhD.
