Building Foundations for Primary Care Team Effectiveness

This module focuses on teams in primary care. Students will develop a clear understanding of the team they lead: the team’s purpose, its members and the community or ethos of the team. The module goes on to develop the students' understanding of the foundations required for effective team working in primary care. This includes aligning individuals’ practice with the primary care team’s shared values. It also includes creating a team climate which values differences between members (e.g. different clinical perspectives) and makes use of these differences. The module works through a series of steps that enable team leaders to establish a culture which makes others feel safe to discuss concerns, make suggestions and provide constructive debate. This will include, examining team member engagement and team dynamics, understanding how diversity influences team effectiveness, team conflict resolution, developing team positivity, exploring inter-team working and contextual constraints.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to:

  1. Show a systematic understanding of the theories and debates about team-based working, team effectiveness and the development of effective team climates.
  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theories and methods of reflective practice.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to analyse and critique the evidence relating to effective team working and quality of patient care.
  4. Demonstrate an ability to apply theories and methods that develop an effective team climate.
  5. Apply theories and methods of reflective practice.
  6. Demonstrate practical skills in leadership practice to improve the quality of care.
  7. Demonstrate reflexivity in leadership practice.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of how leadership practice improves and sustains care quality.
  9. Demonstrate practical skills to embed diversity, equality and inclusion in leadership practices.
