Research skills in Immunology

Course Type

The module is divided into a methodology component and a regular journal club.

The module uses a combination of lectures, small group tutorials, laboratory practicals and demonstrations to introduce a range of methodologies relevant for immunology and immunotherapy research, and to illustrate their application and advantages. This includes the use of immunoassays, microscopy, molecular biology techniques and biochemical approaches for biological research.

The journal club element, which runs throughout Semester 1, aims to provide experience of interpreting and presenting cutting-edge research relevant to immunology and immunotherapy. Through these sessions students develop critical analysis and oral presentation skills.

Module attendance

Two weeks of lectures, small group tutorials, laboratory practicals and demonstrations. Weekly journal clubs in person throughout the semester.


Coursework (100%)
At the end of the module each student will be examined on an individually prepared oral presentation of an additional research publication selected by the student with the agreement of the academic lead. Each presentation will be limited to 20 minutes in length including 5 minutes for questions.

Dr Heather Long, Dr Nick Jones, Dr Will Jenkinson (Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy) and a number of other researchers and experts in particular laboratory techniques from across the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, including Dr Steve Thomas, Dr Fiyaz Mohammed, Dr Sarah Dimeloe, Dr Graham Taylor and Dr Kai Toellner.
