Course Type
Postgraduate, Continuing professional development, Module

Module Overview

Through a Continuing Professional Development framework, this module facilitates the synthesis of the theoretical and practical aspects of a student's development through a period of mentorship within the work based/practice environment which can be documented with a professional portfolio. Students will have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings to enable development of existing knowledge and skills and advancement of practice. The practice mentor will enable a student's development through a partnership of teaching; researching; managing; observing and discussing with innovation being encouraged within the framework of safe, legal, and ethical practice as detailed in any applicable published standards (e.g. professional registration body, specialist competencies etc).

The student will attend a study half-day and complete on-line preparatory study to prepare for mentorship. Students will attend a work based/practice environment and will undertake a minimum of 100 hours (150 hours for MSc/ PGDip Advanced Manipulative Physiotherapy). Learning needs may necessitate a range of environments as part of the mentored experience to ensure that all outcomes are achieved e.g. working with different teams, age ranges, gaining experience of musculoskeletal imaging, etc. The selection of the work-based environment is negotiated by the student, dependent upon their individual learning needs, their programme of registration and any specialist requirements. A range of patterns of delivery of the mentored practice experience are possible, encompassing part time and full time modes as well as a variety of models of experience.

Study half-day (4 hours) at the commencement of the module. Ten self-directed study hours allocated to reviewing theoretical components to inform development of learning contract. Further tutorial support for the development of a learning contract can be offered by a member of the module team upon student's request. A minimum of 100 hours of negotiated specialist mentorship within a work based practice setting. The nature of the mentorship will be specific to the student's individual learning outcomes which will be listed in their learning contract.

This will be supported by a learning contract and professional portfolio, documenting evidence of the student's development and achievements against learning outcomes and, where required, corroboration in the form of a report from the Practice Mentor. Feedback to the student will include analysis and written comments from the tutors.

Formative assessment: This will be done by the mentor to aid progress during the mentored practice at a time negotiated by the student.

Reassessment: Repeat viva (following additional negotiated hours of mentored practice if required).
