Olu Popoola

Olu Popoola, a PhD researcher at The Centre for Corpus Research, has launched OutLiar, a deception blog that showcases investigative linguistic techniques and explores instances of (alleged) duplicity, doublespeak and disinformation in global affairs past and present.

In recent posts, Olu has described and applied deception detection techniques to sports doping cases and revelations from the ‘Panama Papers’ leak. The blog will draw on Olu’s thesis – “Towards a general linguistic approach to the detection of disinformation and mass deception in four domains: online review fraud, fake news, imposter websites and health communication” - as well as (non-confidential) materials used in deception workshops he has conducted for legal professionals and educators since 2015.
