Liver Disease model system

Rick Dunn and collaborators publish in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society

A lead team at the University of Edinburgh, with assistance from researchers at Phenome Centre Birmingham led by Professor Rick Dunn, have collaborated to model non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in human hepatocyte cells.  Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of liver disease in developed countries, and current hepatic cancer-derived cell lines are not highly representative of NAFLD mechanisms.

In the paper, the team developed a model of NAFLD using hepatocyte-like cells which, when treated with lactate, pyruvate and octanoic acid, recapitulated the transcriptional and metabolic dysregulation seen in NAFLD.  This in vitro model of NAFLD will be useful for future mechanistic and therapeutic studies.
