About

High Performance Computing enables and enhances great research, which the University of Birmingham provides through BEAR. The BEAR Conference is a special event for all research students to present work which BEAR, and the sister HPC clusters Baskerville and Sulis, has made possible.

Our aim is to create an open and engaging environment to stimulate the exchange of ideas between different fields. In particular, the workshop will give young researchers from diverse areas the opportunity to establish the necessary interdisciplinary connections to actively participate in research within high performance cluster environments.

The theme of the conference is: High-Performance Computing Across Disciplines

We want to hear how your work has been shaped by previous research, current goals and how it will influence the future. Whether quantitative or qualitative, our hope is that this opportunity will provide a chance to discuss cross-cutting topics such as next generation technology, ethics and fairness, and knowledge dissemination.

Keynote Speakers

We are extremely excited to welcome Dr. Neil Ashton, who currently works as WW Tech Leader for CAE at Amazon Web Services. Neil is a subject-matter expert for Computational Fluid Dynamics and High Performance Computing (HPC) across Amazon and lead for the Amazon-wide CFD working group. More information on Neil can be found on his website https://neilashton.co.uk

Dr. Kit Windows-Yule, Associate Professor in Chemical Engineeringhere at the University of Birmingham. Kit’s research interests concern the dynamics of particulate, fluid, and multiphase systems, and the development of novel experimental and numerical methodologies through which these systems can be explored. More information on Kit's research can be found in the following University website

Jack Sykes, the CEO of EvoPhase - a Univerisity of Birmingham spin-out will be talking about the process of spinning out an idea into a commercial reality. The following website is news report about EvoPhase.

Oral Presentations

We are welcoming a small number of attendees to give an oral presentation about their research. Depending on the number of speakers, the talks may take between 10 and 20 minutes.

Poster Presentations

Attendees are welcome to bring an A1 (portrait) poster displaying their research, which they may present at a poster session.

Why should I enter?

This is a unique opportunity to raise your research profile and engage a public audience. The committee challenges you to consider your research and how it can be creatively captured and communicated to a non-specialist audience.

The BEAR Conference is a friendly and welcoming event where you can:

  • Present your research results with a talk or poster in a relaxed environment
  • Meet other postgraduate researchers from different groups
  • Learn how innovative research techniques are being used across various research fields

Additionally, there are prizes, sponsored by Lenovo for:

  • Best presentation
  • Best poster

Registration and deadlines

You can register to attend the conference or register to give a talk/poster via our Teams Form. Please ensure to leave a valid email address in the Teams Form so that we can contact you to let you know whether your talk/poster is accepted.

Deadline for abstract submission is the 23 February 2024.
