PPIE Governance

At the CRCTU, patient advocates are embedded into all levels of our work. As well as helping on individual projects such as clinical trials, patient advocates also sit on our PPIE Steering Group, helping with unit-wide projects to improve PPIE at the CRCTU. A group of patient advocates also form the Patient Advisory Board and oversee the strategy and performance of the trials unit.

PPIE Steering Group

The CRCTU PPIE Steering Group is a group of staff and patient advocates that work together to identify priority projects that can help the trials unit work better for patients. Established in October 2024, the PPIE Steering Group has already completed a number of projects, including developing the information for this website and the CRCTU PPI Booklet (PDF, 10.3MB).

The PPIE Steering Group is also adding PPIE into the CRCTU’s quality management system, to ensure that all staff are trained to do PPIE work and that all PPIE work is done to the same standard on all projects.

In time, the PPIE Steering Group will develop a suite of training for patient advocates to ensure that people working with the CRCTU get the support they need.

Patient Advisory Board

The CRCTU Patient Advisory Board (PAB) are advisory to the directors of the trials unit. This group of patients and members of the public was established in 2025 and is responsible for advising on our strategy, as well as checking the performance of the trials unit against the targets we set. The PAB is chaired by patient advocate, Neil, and attended by a representative from the Directors Committee. They meet every other month. So far, the PAB has assisted with setting and measuring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and have become part of the New Business process, taking an active role in deciding which new projects we accept.
