Summer Science Exhibit

How clean is clean?
How do you know if your dishes are “really” clean after washing them? In this activity, you will use all your senses to assess cleanliness of common kitchenware. You will see, touch and hear what “clean” means.
And when you enter the Formulation lab, you will learn how temperature, time, formulated products and mechanical removal are used to design more efficient and sustainable cleaning processes.

Find the formulated product
As you walk through our home, you will find a range of everyday products to explore, from instant coffee and chocolate to laundry detergents and dishwashing liquids. Are they all formulated? How can you tell?
This activity will help you to understand the science behind some of the most common formulated products, and how their characteristic microstructures are created to ensure they work as we all expect when we use them.

The Formulation recipe
Shampoo is something most of us use, but do you know how its ingredients are chosen and mixed to get the performance you like? How can we make it “just right” for us?
In this activity you will compare shampoo formulations (the recipes) to understand how different ingredients, and their proportions in the recipe, will make them thinner or thicker, changing the way we use them and feel them.
