The Henry Wellcome Building for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (HWB-NMR)

Pioneering Ultra-High Field NMR Research in the UK

HWB-NMR is a £20 million national resource based in Birmingham, enabling researchers to explore the 3D structures and interactions of proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, and metabolites. Equipped with the world’s most advanced gigahertz NMR spectrometers, it delivers unparalleled insights into the molecular basis of biological mechanisms in human health, environmental systems, and microbial lifecycles. By integrating NMR with electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry and computational methods, we provide a complete 4-dimensional view of molecular processes (adding time evolution to the 3D coordinates), accelerating discoveries that transform lives.
