About IRIS

The Institute for Research into International Migration and Superdiversity

IRIS was established as a cross-University of Birmingham institute in 2012 and has quickly gained ground and recognition to become one of the world’s leading institutes for the interdisciplinary study of migration-driven superdiversity. We are the first institute in the UK and one of the first globally to focus on superdiversity.

Since its launch, IRIS has grown into a vibrant and expansive research hub, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration with over 100 academics across the university working on migration and diversity-related topics. These include migrant integration, migrant health and wellbeing, migration and urban regeneration, immigrants and the labour market, migration governance and the irregularisation of migration, youth mobility and migrant aspirations, the economic integration of immigrants, and sexual and gender-based violence among refugees.

IRIS has supervised over 30 PhD students since its inception and currently supports more than 20 doctoral researchers. Our team includes core staff, university-based associates, and affiliates from outside the institution. We also welcome visiting professors and researchers working in our areas of interest.

Our community brings together senior, mid-career, and early-career scholars, fostering a strong culture of mentorship and collaboration. Together, we contribute to a dynamic and supportive research environment.

Our research is published in leading academic journals and by world-leading publishers. Our research feeds into a broad portfolio of impact and engagement activities. We advise governments and leading humanitarian organisations at local, national and global levels including the UN, European Commission, the British government, the Council of Europe, IOM, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Doctors of the World.
