The Penn-Birmingham Transatlantic Migration Fellowship Program (The Penn-Birmingham Fellows Program) is a network of over 35 PhD students and early career researchers which was launched in Autumn 2021.
The Program is run collaboratively between the University of Birmingham’s Institute for Research into Superdiversity (IRiS) and the University of Pennsylvania Migration Initiative. It aims to foster collaboration between American and British migration scholarship, develop leadership, and support successful transitions from PhD research to policy impact and academic employment.
The fellowship program is led by Dr. Jennifer Allsopp at the University of Birmingham and Professor Roberto G. Gonzales at the University of Pennsylvania. It welcomes fellows from the Institute for Research into Superdiversity and the University of Pennsylvania Migration Initiative along with Fellows based at other universities including Harvard University, Columbia University, several University of California campuses, and the Max Plank Institute, among others institutions.
Fellows meet online twice a month to share research and receive feedback with a view to foster collaboration between American and British scholarship and support successful transitions from PhD status to academic employment. In the academic year 2023-24, we will continue to host our transatlantic online speaker series featuring pioneering scholarship in the migration studies field.
