The NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Public Health Genomics

Launched on 1 April 2025, the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Public Health Genomics is one of 13 specialist research units established across England in partnership with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

Based at the University of Birmingham, this unit is dedicated to advancing the use of genomic science in protecting and improving public health.

Our research focuses on harnessing genomic data to better understand infectious disease transmission, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging health threats. By integrating cutting-edge technologies with public health practice, we aim to deliver insights that inform policy, enhance preparedness, and improve population health outcomes.

As part of the national HPRU network, we collaborate across disciplines and institutions to strengthen the UK’s health protection research infrastructure and respond to evolving challenges with innovation and impact.
