Living Well, Moving Well – Supporting Older Adults

3 Women on exercise bikes in the Move Well facilities at the University of Birmingham

Living Well, Moving Well is a free community exercise and wellbeing programme delivered by the Centre for Movement and Wellbeing (MoveWell) in partnership with Age UK Birmingham. The programme is funded by the Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System (ICS) Fairer Futures Fund, supporting healthier, more independent communities.

The programme is designed for adults aged 50 years and over and aims to reduce age-related declines in health through personalised exercise and holistic support, helping people improve their strength, balance, mobility, confidence, and overall wellbeing.

Where appropriate (and with your consent), we may also refer you to Age UK for a free home-based holistic assessment. This assessment looks beyond physical health, considering your home environment, mental wellbeing, social connections, and any additional support that could help you remain healthy and independent.

What does the programme involve?

The programme runs for 8 weeks, with two supervised exercise sessions each week.

  • Session duration: 45–60 minutes
  • Tuesday clinic: 11:00am – 12:00 pm
  • Friday clinic: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Your individual session will take place within these clinic times and will be tailored specifically to your needs. Exercises may focus on improving strength, balance, mobility, cardiovascular fitness, and confidence.

Before starting, you'll complete a health assessment, and your progress will be reviewed again at the end of the programme.

  • Are aged 50 years or over.
  • Want to improve your strength, balance or mobility.
