Chemical Engineering research opportunities

The School of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham is one of the largest centres for the postgraduate education of chemical engineers in the UK. We have pioneered development and research in rapidly expanding new areas such as pharmaceuticals and bioproducts, food processing, hydrogen fuel cells and energy research, as well as having leading-edge groups in fluid and particle mechanics.

Doctoral research and PhDs

  • Chemical Engineering PhD / MSc (Res)

  • Chemical Engineering with Integrated Study PhD

    This Chemical Engineering PhD with Integrated Study combines a broad foundation in chemical/bioprocess engineering through taught and assessed coursework with the full research training of a PhD.

  • Formulation Engineering EngD

    The Formulation Engineering EngD, based in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), is a four year postgraduate programme consisting of study and research, mainly based in industry. Learn more.

Master of Research (MRes)

  • Chemical Engineering Science MRes

    Chemical Engineering Science Master of Research (MRes) Selected modules from our taught programmes can be combined with an extended research project to obtain an Master of Research (MRes) degree.

Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT)

These bring together diverse areas of expertise to train engineers and scientists with the skills, knowledge and confidence to tackle today's evolving issues, and future challenges.

They also provide a supportive and exciting environment for you, create new working cultures, build relationships between teams in universities and forge lasting links with industry.
