Emerging Device Technology (EDT)

We are a group of researchers whose interests are based around the theme of microwave materials, devices and systems. We specialise in applying new manufacturing technologies and novel materials to high frequency devices and antennas from microwave to terahertz.

  • A collage of EDT equipment

We have a solid materials research base, with many years of experience in superconducting, ferroelectric, dielectric and meta-materials. We combine research into manufacturing technologies with basic science and characterisation of materials. We regularly collaborate with industrial end users to demonstrate the applications of our research.

Our research focus is strongly informed by the requirements of the communications and sensing industries. This helps determine the choice of materials and technology we investigate. Our main areas of research are summarised below:

  • 3D printed microwave and mm-wave filters and antennas
  • Mm-wave and terahertz antenna systems (e.g. metal waveguide arrays, phased array)
  • Programmable / reconfigurable microwave devices using liquid metals
  • Microwave circuit theory and device technology (e.g. multi-port filtering networks, integrated filtering antennas…)
  • THz devices for communications, sensing and metrology
  • Micromachining and microfabrication technologies for mm-wave and THz
  • Cryogenic microwave devices
  • EDT Research areas

We carry out a range of research projects, often in collaboration with partners at other universities and in industry. Below are a selection of our current research projects.
