This network has been funded by an LMS Scheme 3 Grant since 2005, and has received partial support from ERC since 2012. The HanPDE network has its own webpage. Currently it includes Bath, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Madrid and Warwick as its nodes.

Analysis

The underlying focus of mathematical analysis is the study of functions. An enormous number of the mathematical models that have been developed over the years to study the economic, physical, natural and social sciences describe the behaviour of real-world systems using functions to represent the objects being modelled, and the ways in which these objects evolve and interact is represented by equations involving functions, such as ordinary and partial differential equations.

Some of these (especially nonlinear equations) are too complex to be solved using current technology, and we do not know, for instance, whether initially smooth solutions to the equations of fluid flow can develop turbulent behaviour. The members of the analysis group study equations involving functions, and in some cases, study the properties of functions and ways in which they can be represented, in order to improve our capacity to tackle the equations.

North British Functional Analysis Seminars
North British Functional Analysis Seminars
The North British Functional Analysis Seminar (NBFAS) was founded in February 1968 by the late Frank Bonsall and John Ringrose with a meeting at the University of Edinburgh. The founding universities were Edinburgh and Newcastle. Since then, almost 200 meetings took place at the growing number of member institutions (at present 12 universities in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland) with the purpose to bring to the UK leading figures in functional analysis that are based outside the UK. The seminar normally meets three times a year, holding a one or two-day meeting in one of its member institutions, where distinguished mathematicians, usually from abroad, are invited to lecture.
