The School of Mathematics is keen to attract graduate students to engage in mathematics research and invites applications to our PhD programmes. Our experience in the School is that a diverse academic community stimulates creative ideas and innovative approaches to solutions to mathematical problems.
The School offers intellectually stimulating environment and inclusive and welcoming space to anyone who is passionate about mathematics. We particularly welcome applications from underrepresented communities. To be accepted onto the programme students must be enthusiastic about continuing to study mathematics and normally have an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper-second or first-class MSci degree in a mathematics-related subject.
The School offers a mentoring scheme for the application process for students from underrepresented groups, for example this may include (but is not limited to) students with disabilities, students from ethnic minority backgrounds, female or non-binary students, first-generation students, or students from the LGBTQ+ community.
If you identify with an underrepresented group in mathematics, we strongly encourage you to contact the School of Mathematics Equality and Diversity leads, Dr Sara Jabbari or Professor Olga Maleva, to take part in this mentoring. (Please note, these contacts are for the mentoring scheme enquiries only.)
Applications are accepted throughout the year. However, to be considered for scholarships for the September 2026 start, the applicants need to apply by the deadline of 11 January 2026.
