Characterisation Facility (CF)

The Characterisation Facility is situated in the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham. The facility has a wide range of equipment, used for both teaching and research, for sample preparation and characterisation of materials.

Techniques and Equipment

  • Sample preparation (Cutting, Mounting, Grinding/Polishing and Chemical Etching)
  • Heat treatment (Ovens and Furnaces – Tube and Muffle)
  • Structural characterisation (XRD, XRF, FTIR, Raman, Particle size, Zeta potential)
  • Thermal characterisation (Dilatometer, STA, DSC)
  • Microscopy (Optical, Digital, SEM)
  • Mechanical testing (Hardness, Charpy, Tensile)

Campus map green zone

We are spread out across numerous different laboratories within the department.

You can find us in the School of Metallurgy and Materials. G6 on the campus map in the green zone. We are in the building opposite the North Gate.
