Institute for Global Innovation Resilient Cities Launch Event

Tuesday 17 April 2018, 13:15 - 16:30
Bramall (R12 on campus map [PDF])

On Tuesday 17 April the Institute for Global Innovation (IGI) will be launching the Resilient Cities theme with an event exploring the challenges being faced by cities in low and middle-income countries.

Background

Cities confront diverse and interlocking forces that can subject their population to distress such as economic and social change or pressures placed upon infrastructure and environmental resources. A more resilient city can limit the impact of these forces and therefore improve the lives of inhabitants. Co-developed responses and interventions need to understand and embrace the specific complexities of individual cities, whilst being inclusive and sustainable.

The ‘City Resilience’ theme, led by Dr Jonathan Radcliffe (EPS) will investigate the drivers of urban distress and the conditions for securing city resilience, with a focus on global cities from low and middle-income countries that are undergoing transitions at different levels of analysis: individual; community; city; national.

The launch

The aims of the launch event are to introduce the work of the Resilient Cities theme, establish a community of researchers with similar interests, and initiate discussions that will help the research programme develop.

We will provide an insight to the team’s multidisciplinary expertise of global cities, as well as expertise of technical, social and institutional systems. There will be several external speakers, from the UK and overseas

Throughout the programme the theme will re-assess the concept of resilience and its measurement; applying analysis to key city sub-systems through work streams covering:

Lunch will be provided in the atrium of the Bramall from 12:30 and presentations will commence in the Elgar Concert hall at 13:30. There will be opportunity for networking and feedback through panel discussions

If you have any questions that you would like to submit for the panel discussion please email these in advance to k.dehal@bham.ac.uk by Tuesday 10 April 2018.

IGI

IGI is a new research initiative designed to bring together multidisciplinary teams of researchers to address some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. The IGI will focus its attention on addressing a number of specific challenges, articulated by its Main and Emerging themes. The IGI will also work closely with the Colleges to enhance the environment, support and infrastructure for interdisciplinary research across the University.
