African Leadership on Global Challenges

Solutions discussed:

Leadership in Civil Society for Equal Access to HIV Treatment

In South Africa, civil society leaders organised the Treatment Action Campaign to push companies and get the rules to change so that generic medicines could be produced by companies in the Global South so that everyone could be served at prices they could afford. This involved civil society leaders bringing down the prices of anti-retroviral drugs and changing the rules of trade in medicine.

Collective Leadership in Africa

The model of leadership that Africa needs is collective leadership. For instance, the Kenya Tea Development Authority is a huge cooperative owned by small holder farmers who are responsible for 60% of Kenya's tea exports. They exercise collective leadership whereby one leader is not dominating the entire organisation and process.

Strengthening the African Union

The African Union needs to be strengthened whereby they have authority that enables them to sign treaties and enforce laws. They also need to be adequately funded in order to effectively carry out their duties.
